Welcome to Purves and Associates Insurance Agency

Your California insurance agency of choice.

The story begins in 1972 when George Purves took his first insurance Agency job at Brinley’s Real Estate and Insurance in Davis, CA. It was common at the time for the real estate and insurance business to be combined, but Mr. Brinley’s primary focus was on the real estate side. Mr. Brinley was a Davis institution, known for his generosity and integrity, and he mentored George in the business. Eventually, Mr. Brinley sold the insurance arm of the business to George Purves who joined his practice with Stehli & Cervelli, creating the powerhouse Stehli, Purves & Cervelli Independent Insurance Agency of Davis. The agency sold insurance to local businesses and farms as well as home and auto insurance to families in Davis and the surrounding areas.

Jerry Cervelli retired in the 1980s and in the early 1990s so did Al Stehli, at which time Purves Insurance partnered with McGee & Thielen Insurance in Sacramento, CA. McGee, Thielen & Purves operated together until 2001 when George and son Scott, who had joined the firm in 1996, returned to Davis and re-established Purves & Associates Insurance Agency of Davis. By this time the business had expanded to include all lines of insurance coverage for businesses, including group benefits plans for employees. Purves also became the official partner of Lyon Real Estate in 2001, offering homeowners and auto insurance to the thousands of home buyers who work with Lyon. Chris Purves, the last of George’s children, joined the firm in 2003 with a focus on commercial insurance risks.

Purves Insurance has continued to grow and now serves personal and business clients throughout the Sacramento Valley and Foothills. We believe strongly in the values of honesty and integrity that were championed by Mr. Brinley and George Purves in our beginning, and that our success is entirely dependent on providing our clients with the right insurance coverage and honest, professional advice.

About the team

George Purves

George Purves - Founder and CEO

George grew up in Hollister, California. He is a veteran of the U.S. Army and received a Bachelor Degree in Economics at Chico State University and did graduate studies of Economics at Fresno State. George began his insurance career with the Insurance Company of North America (INA) in their Marketing Department. George left the company to enter the Agency business with John Brinley in 1972 in Davis. He has served as President of both the Yolo County and Sacramento County Independent Insurance Agency Brokers Association and on the California Board of Directors of the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers Association. George was voted the “Outstanding Insurance Professional’ by his fellow Northern California Insurance Brokers in 1994 and still serves on the prestigious study group, “McAllps Forum of Insurance Issues”. George and his wife Marsha live in Davis and have 19 grandchildren. George loves golf and routinely beats his sons like a drum.

Scott Purves

Scott Purves - CIC - President

Scott is a graduate of Davis High School (1990) and the University of Utah, Salt Lake City (1996). Scott has focused on Group Benefits for businesses in the region, including group medical, life & disability, dental, vision and other benefits. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Sacramento Health Underwriters Association, the Davis Downtown Business Association and is a Past President of the Insurance Brokers & Agents of Sacramento. He has also been involved in industry lobbying efforts, traveling to Washington DC many times to meet with Northern California members of Congress. In 2014, Scott was honored as the Insurance Professional of the Year by IBA Sacramento.  Scott is the Northern California Authorized Representative for AVMA Life, an insurance Trust for Veterinarians.  He lives in Davis, CA with his beautiful wife Joanna and their four busy children. He is awesome.

Chris Purves

Chris Purves - CIC - Vice President

Chris joined the family insurance business in 2003 after graduating from Brigham Young University, and is also a Davis High School alum (1996). He spent his first three years working in the agency’s personal lines department selling and servicing home and auto insurance. In 2007 Chris transitioned to Commercial Insurance, working with new and many long-term customers, as well as developing new markets. In 2008, Chris earned his CIC (Certified Insurance Counselor) designation. He and his wife Angie are busy raising five boys in his home town of Davis, CA. He wants to be awesome like Scott.

Edward Dahlquist

Edward Dahlquist - Controller

Edward is a Certified Public Accountant and graduate from Texas A&M University – Commerce.  His background includes a wide variety of experience in many different industries, including not for-profit, manufacturing, and import/export. During his career, he has also sat on several boards of directors in various roles. Some of Edward’s interests include motorcycling, craft beer brewing, and home improvement projects. He currently resides in Sacramento, CA. Although he is not as awesome as Scott, he’s still pretty cool.

Brittany Woods

Brittany Woods - CIC – Commercial Lines Account Manager

Brittany joined the team in January of 2008 as our Receptionist. Shortly thereafter she moved  to personal lines as an Account Manager and in February of 2012 to her current position as Commercial Lines Account Manager.  In 2015 she earned the Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designation from The National Alliance for Insurance Education and Research.  Aside from working with a great team, her favorite part of her job is getting to know her clients and knowing that she’s helping to provide peace of mind while protecting their greatest assets.

Originally from New Orleans, where most of her family still lives, Brittany’s parents moved to Northern California when she was young.  While the South will always have her heart, California’s beauty has her captivated.  Some of her favorite pastimes are exploring all what the Golden State has to offer.  From hiking, picnics at a sunny winery, wading in the river, or a drive down the coast, it’s obvious she’s fallen in love with California.  When not working or discovering new adventures, you’ll find her cuddled up with her Chihuahua and a good book.  Aside from family and friends, there’s nothing she loves more than animals and reading!

Stephanie Bryner

Stephanie Bryner - CIC - Commercial Lines Account Manager

Stephanie joined our team as our receptionist in 2001. She quickly moved to the personal lines department where she spent many years as an account manager and Supervisor. In 2011 she transitioned into our Commercial department where she enjoys the challenge of working with the broad variety of industries our clients serve as well as the opportunity to build relationships with her customers. In 2015 Stephanie obtained her CIC designation. Stephanie grew up in beautiful Sonoma County and moved to Davis after graduating high school. She now lives in Sacramento with her two young daughters. Stephanie loves to read any chance she gets, cook, bake, go to concerts and of course, spend time with her family and best friend, Amber. We are lucky to have her!

Laura Howard

Laura Howard - Employee Benefits Account Manager

Laura has more than 19 years of experience and in-depth knowledge working with various aspects of employee benefits.  Her background includes: service, sales, management, underwriting, operations, claims and marketing.  Laura earned her California Insurance License in 2001, holds an AS degree in business and is certified in accounting.  Laura has completed numerous continuing education courses relevant to her insurance license and holds ACA, HIPAA and COBRA certifications.

Laura has worked for Purves & Associates since 2001.  She is responsible for all aspects of service for our benefits clients, leads projects and coordinates benefits marketing and renewals.  Laura is a tenacious advocate for our clients and their employees.  Her competency with complex benefit issues has been invaluable to serving our clients.   Helping others is the most satisfying part of Laura’s role here, and she greatly values her long-standing client relationships.

When not at work you can find Laura dodging conversations related to the Affordable Care Act.  In her personal time, Laura’s daughter keeps her busy with sports and school activities.  She also enjoys decorating, traveling, cooking, reading, nature, swimming, and spending time with her husband Michael, family and friends.

Candida Gringerich

Candida Gringerich - Finance Asst. & Employee Benefits Assistant

Candida was born in Texas, but became a California resident in 1985. Growing up mostly in Northern California, she has been a resident in Davis, CA since 2001. Candida graduated from Woodland Community college in 2008 with an Associate Degree in Behavioral and Social Science, and again in 2010 with an Associate Degree in Business.  She is currently attending California State University Sacramento for a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. She has been working in accounting since 2011. She loves sports and is at all of her sons sporting events.

Amber Bryner

Amber Bryner - Personal Lines Supervisor

Amber started in 2003 as our receptionist and after obtaining her insurance license moved into our personal lines department where she’s held many positions from sales to account managing. She loves connecting with our clients and enjoys working closely with the personal lines team to make sure we’re providing the best service possible.

Amber grew up in Davis and is one of the several Davis High alums in the office. She lives with her husband Mike (also a DHS alum) in West Sacramento with their two rambunctious sons (and a dog, a turtle, a snake and chickens). She has been accused of being a bit Disney-obsessed and takes her family to Disneyland any chance she gets. Outside of Disneyland, she enjoys reading, crafting, camping and simply spending time with her family.  She’s pretty great, we’re lucky to have her.

Angie Johnston

Angie Johnston - Personal Lines Account Manager

Angie has been in Personal Lines at Purves since 2005 (minus a couple of years or so she moved away from Davis thinking the grass was greener). She learned this is the best place to work and live and couldn’t be happier! She says customers that occasionally drop in to take care of their insurance needs in person is a perk of working for a small town agency, but also helping people insure their homes and autos throughout the state of California is especially rewarding.

Angie was born in South Mississippi and moved here from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, settling in Davis around 2004. Outside of work, she enjoys spending as much time as possible with her 3 young adult children, visiting her family in the South, acrylic and oil painting, crafting projects, treasure hunting at flea markets and thrift stores for her projects, Netflix and last but not least – spending time with her boyfriend, eating out, biking, long walks and traveling.

Jon Merker

Jon Merker - Personal Lines Account Manager

Jon joined the Purves & Associates Insurance team in 2015.  Jon brings a myriad of Insurance experience having been a part of the Independent Insurance Agency business for over thirty years.  With the philosophy of always treating his clients as family, he brings a ‘how would my clients want to be treated’ mantra when working with clients.  In 2004, he graduated from Sac State with a BA in Communications and is always looking to forward his education.

Outside of the office, Jon is a community volunteer with Kiwanis and has been awarded annually the AARP Services ‘Agent Community Engagement & Service Certificate of Achievement’ award for performing volunteer community service.  In his ‘free time’ he is an avid gardener, competition chili cook, DJ and don’t ask him anything about British cars, as he won’t stop talking.  Married, with three adult sons and two grandsons, family is in his blood at work and at home.  “I’m always here to be of help”

Kate Rich

Kate Rich - Personal Lines Account Manager

Kate grew up in Davis, but left to attend college in San Francisco and then later Sacramento.  She returned home after graduating with a degree in Anthropology to work on her plot for world domination.  While she patiently waits for her evil clone army to be ready to take over the world she entertains herself with amateur photography, reading, creative writing, and spending time with family.  Kate has a delightful sense of humor, charming personality, and speaks fluent sarcasm.  Kate joined the Personal Lines team here at Purves & Associates in 2015 and since then has learned a great deal.  She enjoys working closely with our clients to ensure all their insurance needs are met.

Sana Tharadra

Sana Tharadra - Personal Lines Account Manager

Sana grew up in beautiful Southern California. She joined the agency’s personal lines department in 2014, where she enjoys building relationships and servicing the unique needs of her clients. Sana loves to read, cook and on most weekends you will find her climbing mountains.

Keren Worthylake

Keren Worthylake - Personal Lines Account Manager

Keren grew up in Israel and served two years in the Israeli army. She has traveled extensively throughout Europe and Africa before settling down in California in 2001.  She has experience in customer service and has been working in the personal lines department since 2016. She enjoys spending time with family and friends, dancing with her daughter, reading, cooking and traveling. She lives in Davis with a talented photographer named Timothy Wilkinson, their beautiful daughter Zoe and their three dogs.

Kurt Schrader

Kurt Schrader - Personal Lines Account Executive

Kurt was born and raised in Davis, California and earned his bachelor’s degree in business from California State University, Sacramento.  He is actively pursuing the Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designation and hopes to obtain his MBA in the near future.  Over the past 5 years he has filled various roles in the agency’s personal lines department and currently heads up the new business team.  Kurt specializes in home, auto, flood, and umbrella insurance.

When he’s not nerding out on insurance you will most likely find him out on the golf course, cycling along the American River Bike Trail or BBQing his famous bacon wrapped jalapeno poppers.

Atlanta Parrott

Atlanta Parrott - Personal Lines New Business Team

Atlanta grew up in Davis and graduated from DaVinci Charter Academy.  She is currently working on her Women’s Studies major at Sacramento City College.  Atlanta has been with Purves & Associates since 2010 and is a vital member of the Personal Lines New Business Team. When away from the office, she enjoys playing with her two cats, watching super hero movies with her boyfriend, playing word games and spending time with her many siblings. During her time at Purves & Associates Atlanta has helped build the New Business team, trained new members, created procedures, and been a pleasant, knowledgeable, and tenacious member of our office.

Amanda Mundelius

Amanda Mundelius - Personal Lines New Business Team

Amanda grew up in Sebastopol, California. She received an Associate’s Degree in psychology from Santa Rosa Junior College (2012) and a Bachelor’s Degree in biological psychology from UC Davis (2015). Amanda joined the Personal Lines New Business Team in 2015. In her free time she enjoys making sushi, watercolor painting, and binge watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Amy Miller

Amy Miller - Reception

Amy was born and raised in Davis.  After she graduated from Davis High she went to school in Idaho and Utah where she pursued a degree in Sociology/Social work.  Her jobs in the past have been clerical duties after school in high school at Purves & Associates and also spent summer vacations from college working for Purves as well.  She has spent most of the last several years being a stay at home mom for her kids Luke and Grace.  She also owned her own in home childcare business for a few years before coming back to work for Purves & Associates in 2014.  She is happy working at Purves and feels she is finally “home”.  When not working she spends her time with her kids.  She enjoys the beach, reading and watching trashy reality television.

Michael Rossman

Michael Rossman - Personal Lines Account Executive

Michael is a 15-year resident of the Natomas neighborhood in Sacramento. He has served as an Aviation Structural Mechanic in the Navy Reserve since 2009 and plans on retiring from the Navy in 2029 (he knows how to plan!). Michael has been in sales and customer service for over 10 years. He specializes in Personal Lines – home, auto and flood insurance in the Natomas and Elk Grove areas. In his off-time Michael enjoys time with his wife Susan and children Jude, Nathan & Trinity, as well as many other nearby family and friends. He also enjoys reading oversized sci-fi or fantasy novels by authors like George RR Martin, Robert Jordan or Brent Weeks.

Katherine McLoed

Katherine McLoed - Personal Lines Account Executive

Katherine was born in Placerville and raised in El Dorado County. After graduating Union Mine High School in 2004, she moved to Spain for six months. While in Spain she attended the Universidad de Alicante to learn more about the Spanish culture and language.  Katherine gained more than eight years experience in customer service and sales before staying home to raise her two adorable children, Carson and Kinzlie. She joined our Personal Lines Department in 2016 and enjoys serving her client’s needs and earning referrals. Katherine enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, cooking, camping, going to the races and watching baseball, basketball and football. Katherine is part of a competitive fantasy football league and has won the championship against her husband, Casey, for which she is extremely proud! Katherine resides in the town of El Dorado, with her husband, two kids and their dog, Rusty.
