Tips on How to Keep Your New Year’s Resolution(s)

New Year’s resolutions may be difficult to keep but if you take these tips into consideration, you may find 2017 to be a bit more rewarding.

If your 2016 New Year’s resolutions have all but failed, rest assured that you are not alone. Now that 2017 is here, you likely made new New Year’s resolutions, and if you do not take the proper steps to build on your resolutions, they may end up like the ones of years past. Here are a few tips to help you keep your 2017 New Year’s resolution(s).

  1. Make it something you really need. Your resolutions should be something that you feel like you really need. They must fit with your own values, otherwise, you may make excuses as to why you can skip your resolution.
  2. Limit your resolutions. Instead of making four or five resolutions, only create one or two. This low number keeps you from getting overwhelmed and giving up on all of them at once. It keeps it manageable, and keeps your focus on these resolutions which could aid in keeping and reaching your New Year’s goals.
  3. Be specific. Instead of saying, “I’m going to lose weight,” be specific about the amount of weight you want to lose–be it 10 pounds, 20 pounds, or any amount that you think is healthy to lose.
  4. Create a plan. While improvisation may be in the job description of Saturday Night Live cast member, it does not work too well when it comes to achieving your goals. Break your resolutions into smaller steps to help you reach your goal. Achieving your goal becomes much easier when you have regular smaller goals. If you want to lose weight, break it up into weekly or monthly weigh-ins with a specific goal to reach.
